Living Like a Traveler: Keeping Your Focus on Heavenly Things

You’re going on a trip and you’ll be staying in a hotel, what do you usually pack? Of course, some outfits, toiletries, and a few other personal items. When I go on a trip, I pack only the things that are necessary and leave behind the things that aren’t.

So, you get to your hotel, and you’re there for a few days. Do you take everything out and set up your things in the room? I don’t. I usually leave most of my things in my suitcase. Why? Because I know my stay is temporary, and there’s no need to get too comfortable. Soon, I’ll be leaving, and I like to keep my things together so I don’t have a lot to do when it’s time to go home.

I wouldn’t go out and buy things to decorate my hotel room or accumulate a lot of things while I’m there, because I’m not planning on staying forever.

This world is like a hotel for those seeking a Heavenly home. So, we shouldn’t get too comfortable because our stay here is temporary. We shouldn’t place our treasure on earth. We shouldn’t waste money on meaningless things, but instead, we should invest in what truly matters—like spreading the gospel of the Jesus Christ and helping those in need as God leads us to.

If we truly believe that Jesus is coming back soon and are striving to spend eternity with Him in a Heavenly home, we won’t unpack our things and settle into this world. Instead, we will stay alert, always ready, and waiting for the return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

This is your reminder: this world is not your home, so don’t get too comfortable here. Keep your mind fixed on Heavenly things and store your treasures in Heaven.

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal Matthew 6:19, 20

Great analogy! I’ve never thought about this world being compared to a hotel stay. I don’t unpack my suitcase unless I have to iron my outfit and hang it up. Majority of the time, people are not thinking about decorating a hotel room or at least not investing a lot of money into decorating it. I’m going to keep this concept rooted in my heart. I may not have many worldly possession, but my goal is to invest in what really matters. God never wanted us to get comfortable here. Prayerfully I will remain faithful till the end to live eternally with Jesus. Looking forward to one day live peacefully in my new heavenly and new earthly home.
