Stay Hydrated: Body and Soul

Yesterday I was out doing some yard work. It was so hot outside that I was sweating like I was in a sauna. The sun was beating down on me, and even with my sunhat on, it didn’t help. It was just that hot. I was so determined to finish cutting the grass that I didn’t take enough breaks to rehydrate, which led to me having a really bad headache and feeling completely drained for the rest of the evening. Later that day, I was texting with a friend of mine. We were just catching up, talking about how our days had gone. I mentioned that I had been out doing yard work in the heat and wasn’t feeling too well afterward. Toward the end of the conversation, he asked me what lesson I had learned while working outside.

And this is what came to mind. You should never be so caught up in what you’re doing that you forget to take care of yourself, especially something as simple but important as staying hydrated. It’s just like someone who is constantly doing good and working for God but doesn’t take time to personally connect with Him. Without that personal time, your strength runs low.

God is the true source of our strength. When we take time to seek Him through His Word and in prayer, we are renewed. That renewal gives us the energy and focus we need to keep going and to do what we are called to do because we are staying connected to the source of all strength.

So don’t get so wrapped up in life, even if you are doing something good, that you forget to pause, recharge, and take care of yourself. Take time to hydrate physically and spiritually. Trust me, you will not regret it.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. John 15:5
